Description
In 2023 the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) launched a new project “Ensuring the right to environmental protection” to identify the most urgent social and fundamental rights dimensions of the EU’s green transition and relevant implementing legislation against the background of climate change and in light of the overarching principle of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda to leave no one behind. The outcome of this research will provide evidence-based guidance to EU institutions and EU Member States (at different levels) to identify steps necessary to strengthen a just and fair transition and to better implement the green transition in a fundamental rights’ compliant manner.
In this context, this research aimed to collect information on the national implementation of the just transition of the European Green Deal to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. It explored how Belgium is moving towards the overall goal of 2050 with zero net emissions of greenhouse gases, with a specific focus on the just transition aspects of the EU Green Deal.
