The Fundamental Rights Research Centre (FRC) is seeking to fill post-doctoral researcher position (one year full-time/ two years part-time) as part of its team working on human rights and data protection reform of Codes of Criminal Procedure in the Digital Era.
The position is funded as part of the PROMODE project – Modernising Codes of Criminal Procedure on digital investigative methods: combining the languages of criminal procedural law, data protection law, and European human rights law.
The successful candidate will conduct field research in Belgium and the Netherlands, contributing to PROMODE’s analysis of innovative digital investigative measures, such as hacking, open-source online investigations, and AI applications. This research will support the project’s goal of developing proposals for guiding principles and concrete norms for Codes of Criminal Procedure in line with data protection and human rights requirements.
The candidate will be based at the FRC at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel’s (VUB) Faculty of Law and Criminology and will work in collaboration with PROMODE’s principal investigators, Prof. Paul De Hert (VUB) and Prof. Katalin Ligeti (University of Luxembourg).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field research in Belgium and the Netherlands.
- Contribute to scholarly publications and reports within the PROMODE project framework.
- Collaborate with project partners and present findings at academic and professional events.
- Assist in project-related activities, such as workshops and dissemination efforts.
Qualifications
- A PhD in law, criminology, or a related field with a focus on criminal procedure, data protection law, or human rights law.
- Expertise in digital investigative methods and their legal or regulatory implications is an asset.
- Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of Dutch is an asset; French or German is desirable.
- Strong research and writing skills, with a proven ability to produce academic publications in the area of the law of criminal procedure.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary, international environment.
