Irene WIECZOREK
Biography
Irene Wieczorek is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Durham.
Previously, she was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her project focuses on the impact of mutual recognition in criminal matters on the right to liberty in Europe, and it is financed by the Anspach-Wiener Foundation. The project is jointly supervised by John Spencer and Nicky Padfield (University of Cambridge) and Anne Weyembergh (Université Libre de Bruxelles).
Irene holds a joint PhD in Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The title of her thesis was “ The Legitimacy of EU Criminal Law: what role for normative and instrumental justifications”. Irene was supervised by Paul De Hert (Vrije Universiteit Brussles) and Anne Weyembergh (Université Libre de Bruxelles).
During her PhD, Irene has been a visiting student at the European University Institute, at the University of Trento where she was also invited as a guest lecturer, and at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International criminal law. For these visiting stays Irene has received scholarship supporting her research from the FWO (Research Foundation-Flanders) and the FNRS (Fond National de la Recherche Scientifique).
In July 2014 she was awarded the Diploma of the Academy of European Law (European University Institute) for excellent examination paper.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Irene interned at the legal service and at the Italian desk of Eurojust, the Judicial Cooperation Unit of the European Union, from October 2011 to March 2012. She holds a MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe (2011), an LL.M, major European Law, from Maastricht University (2010) and a LL.M from Trento University (2010). She holds a BA from Trento University (2007) and a BA from Paris 13 University (2007).
