In May, FRC member Leslie Kassongo Tambu presented her PhD research during a symposium organised by the Belgian Network of Junior Researchers in International Law.
In her presentation, Leslie presented a summary of her PhD research proposal. Her research focuses on the changing nature of 'warfare' through social media platforms, as these tools have lately been used to carry out or facilitate the commission of international crimes. But should social media platforms and/or individuals within these companies be held liable when their platforms are used to incite offline violence? Moreover, is the current legal framework equipped to deal with these new technological changes? In the presentation, Leslie gave an overview of the state of the art, the research objectives and the methodology.
The presentation was followed by a discussion with Marie-Laurence Hébert Dolbec, a professor who read the research proposal and guided the discussion, and the audience.
