FRC Members, Amy Weatherburn and Julia Muraszkiewicz have published an article in the National Journal of Immigration and Asylum entitled The Impact of the 2012 Domestic Workers in a Private Household Visa on Human Trafficking for Domestic Servitude. The article considers the poor situation of migrant domestic workers in the UK is partly attributed to the existing restrictive tied visa regime, namely the 2012 Domestic Workers In A Private Household Visa. The lack of the individual’s ability to change employer increases the risk of exploitation and abuse. We ask whether the current legislation and visa restrictions facilitate the trafficking of persons for domestic servitude. Further, the article considers the low number of prosecutions of human trafficking, particularly for domestic servitude in the UK.
